A fantastic resort, very friendly with a great variety of slopes. Excellent hotels and resteraunts, not to mention the world famous spa. Much better than France.
250km of varied slopes, great thermal spa's and good nightlife

Very interesting village with some very nice buildings with a different flair to other ski destinations. I was really impressed how big the skiing area is. It sticks together with the skiing area of Bad Hofgastein and because of that you have many kilometers to drive. You can buy for the whole Gasteinertal one ski pass so you can change the areas. Most of the slopes are red and blue. The mountains in this area are kind of soft in comparison to Sportgastein for example, and because of that I would recommend this area to families and to beginners. But also for good skiers there are many possibilities especially off the slopes. You can run directly down to the village. In the area you will find many beautiful traditional huts with good food and possibilities for après ski. Also in the evening you can go to some nice restaurants or to some party places. Very special beside skiing are the hot thermal fonts and there are some other possibilities for sport beside skiing so you won´t get bored in this place.
variety beside skiing
easy slopes
Bad Hofgastein, Bad Gastein and Sportgastein (and to some extent Dorfgastein although that's further off) together represent a vast array of skiing possibilities. For advanced skiers who are looking for powder and off-piste Sportgastein is definitely it - part of its appeal is that it is not connected to the rest of the ski system, meaning that most skiers don't find their way up there - for many days (excluding some high-season days) the area is nearly empty and offers (despite only having one real lift - although the official count is 3) world-class skiing. There are few single areas in the world that are better than the ride from the top of Kreuzkogel down to base station Sportgastein - I would challenge anyone claiming that Verbier, St. Moritz, St. Anton, Chamonix, Zermatt etc. offer one single ride that tops this (yes - these places overall have larger off-piste possibilities - but I've never found that I've been more satisfied than when plowing through a meter of powder at Sportgastein - and I've skiied all the aforementioned places).
Large ski area, good off-piste in Sportgastein, snow-secure, significant investments made in recent years
Becoming expensive
Ski school brilliant all the instructors seemed keen and helpful. The lift system is not so good only one lift to the top of the mountain and to connect to this once you are their you have to ski half way down the mountain and rejoin the main lift which is not easy in the mornings. The slopes are to steep for comfort if you have just become an intermediate. The slope back to the resort is a small narrow track from half way down and was closed in February due to lack of snow. It is also very busy for the amount of lifts and their carrying capacity. The town is a long walk down hill and is quite pretty yet the ski lift area seems more industrial looking than you would expect in an Austrian ski resort. But if its ski lessons you need then they are great.
Bad Gastein gives you direct access to 2 major ski areas and you can take the free ski bus or a €30 taxi to two others. If its busy the main lift out of Bad Gastein can be crowded and this can be a pain. The best skiing for beginner/intermediate is in the Sportsgastein 1500-2500m area which football pitch wide open reds and a fantastic blue.Plenty of variey on the slopes for intermediates and advanced.Hard for beginners as the nursery slopes are limited and hard work for beginners. The town is pretty and has the renowned thermal spa beside the ski lift (€18 for 3 hours).Apres ski is ok.Heggbloms Swedish Bar/Silver bullet/Eden are all in a small area and are lively. The resort is popular with Scandavanians which adds flavour.
Ski Well, Stay Healthy You can enjoy the extensive 'ski circus' of slopes and lifts that connect Bad Gastein with other villages in the valley. Ski up a storm and then relax in the hotel pool. If it doesn't have one, try the popular Schwimmbad, a community pool where, according to many experts, you can heal a variety of ailments. Every pool in town has radon gas in the water. Radon frightens home owners in New Jersey, but natives here swear by it. You can also 'take the cure' by sniffing the gas in the healing caves of an old gold mine. It's a program authorized by some medical insurance companies.
