When: 6 Mar 2010
The slopes of Buttermilk outside of Aspen may not always look steep, but you'll be breathing hard if you have to hike up. That's what participants will do in the Chris Bove Memorial Uphill Challenge on Buttermilk Mountain, Sat., March 6. It is an 1,800 vertical foot climb, and participants can compete in a variety of footwear, from snowshoes, and stabilizers to telemark skis or skinny skis. It's a family friendly event that starts at 7:30 a.m. It raises money for Challenge Aspen's local scholarship program, for participants from the Roaring Fork Valley with disabilities, and the Children's Hospital Immunodeficiency Program of Denver.
The race honors the memory of Chris Bove, who was a ski instructor and strong supporter of Challenge Aspen. He died on the eve of the 2007 event.
Everyone is also invited to the post-race celebration at the Cliffhouse, for a $5 pancake breakfast and prize giveaways. The cost to register is $35, and you can sign up online or at the Ute Mountaineer through March 4. Same-day registration is $40 and begins at Buttermilk at 6:45 a.m. race day.
Challenge Aspen is based in Snowmass, and is an internationally established charitable organization, offering participants safe and expert instruction, as well as access to the best competitive ski racing and educational programs available in the world. The group also provides therapeutic art and drama camps to children in the summer.
