2016/2017 Head Big JOY ski review. OnTheSnow tested this ski as part of its women’s Powder Category and awarded it an Editors’ Choice honor.

“For a wide ski, this one can get on edge easily and hold it through the turn,” says Riley of the Head Big JOY. “It’s fun to play with off-piste.” The 110-mm-waisted ski bookends the JOY line, a series of six skis ranging in waist widths down to a narrow 73 mm. Testers awarded the Big JOY high float scores and highest marks in the Powder Category for stability, which surpassed scores for carving performance. Graphene—a carbon material that is a single atom thick—is included in all JOY skis for its high strength-to-weight properties, along with a light wood core. A sandwich cap construction blends sandwich sidewalls with a weight-reducing cap. As part of Head’s ERA 3.0, or rocker architecture, the Big JOY has tip rocker, Intellifibers for tip-vibration absorption and an edge grip-enhancing progressive radius. “This ski can crush the slush or slay softer conditions,” says Fried. “It’s stable and smooth through all turn transitions.”
